Acanthophilus helianthi  (Rossi, 1794)
Main synonym = Musca helianthi    Rossi, 1794
Taxonomical Classification:  Animalia / Arthropoda / Insecta / Diptera / Tephritidae
Safflower fly, Capsule fruit-fly     Maltese name not known
Further Information:
The safflower fly is one of the most important insect pests of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) where losses are caused by larval feeding on receptacle tissue or seeds, leading to disrupted plant activities, reduction in flower buds and ultimately, to decreased quality and quantity of crop. It can feed on several members of the Asteraceae family, particularly Centaurea, Carduus, Carthamus and Sonchus. The species is very small and hence not very conspicuous in the field, but should be looked for on Asteraceae species with ray florets.
